Photo Ops: Sunrise in Budapest Hungary

Sun coming up behind Hungarian Parliament building. Taken from Buda Castle. March 2014

Budapest Hungary is one of my favorite cities to visit in the world and make photography.  It has history, interesting architecture, and safe enough to walk around with heavy camera gear early in the morning or late at night. Also, it is simply beautiful.

I have been fortunate to have visited Budapest for business several times in the past few years.  I have enjoyed Turkish bath, escape rooms, and beer bike tour as well. I also walked around the city pretty much everywhere during the day and night.  But I wanted to photograph the sunrise or sunset though sunset was not realistic due to work schedule.  Sunrise was a possibility as jet lag definitely helped me to be up and about at weird time of the day.

I got lucky one morning during one of my visits.  I woke up right before sunrise, decided to grab my gear, and got out of my room. I did not know what to expect or what direction sun was going to rise. To my surprise, sun was coming up right behind Parliament building.

Tips:

  • Wake up super early or stay at Hilton Buda Castle which is just 3 min walk from the spot.
  • Obviously dress warm.
  • Get there early. As Budapest is a very popular tourist city and very photogenic city, there will be few photographers trying take photos of sunrise.
  • Tripod and cable release. While bringing a tripod to a trip, especially overseas, is not an ideal, it definitely helps in golden hours and nighttime photo ops.
