People have said and many would agree, the best camera is the one that's with you. (Surprisingly, there is a book with the exact title: http://amzn.to/1PcD6xi) Smartphones have made taking much easier, and the quality of pictures have improved a lot over the years. Also, with the abundance of apps and improvements made with AI, taking and editing pictures into unique piece of art/expression made photography accessible and more attractive to many. But I was not a big fan of smartphones and did not convert to it until 2010~2011.
The reason that made me purchase iPhone 4S was this Leica-esque case, that was and still is to me, the coolest looking smartphone case called Gizmon iCA.
Gizmon iCA does not only make iPhones look like a cool camera, but also allows you to take photos like you do with a camera... with a tripod attachment, lenses, and shutter release (available both wired and wireless).
There are different colors, versions, and accessories available for iPhone 4 and 5. Using lenses, especially Fisheye, makes taking photos a lot more fun.
Pros:
Con:
Though I have upgraded to iPhone 6 (Gizmon failed its effort to cloud fund iPhone 6 case...), I still have and use my iPhone 4 along with Gizmon iCA case especially when I'm traveling overseas. It is a great conversation piece, too.
